nadeen roufael, interior architecture and furniture
we look for a long time, then remove what was never needed. what remains is precise, and natural light is given room to define the space.
we do not draw an envelope and hand the interior to other hands. each commission is one continuous work. the topography of the site sets the datum, the structural grid orders the plan, the openings are cut to bring light in as a material, and the same logic carries down to the interior architecture and to the edge of a single cabinet door. a space is read whole, in one movement, not divided among trades. the furniture is not placed in the room, it is drawn out of the geometry that made the room. this is the difference between fitting out a building and authoring one. the work is finished when nothing further can be removed.
jka was established in beirut in 1998. close to three decades of built work, in lebanon, the levant, and the gulf, have given what no portfolio can show on its own, judgement, earned on difficult sites, in hard climates, against the standards of private clients across the region. beirut taught us to work under constraint. the gulf asked for the same discipline at scale. longevity here is not a line on a letterhead. it is the quiet behind every drawing, the knowledge that the condition has been seen before, detailed before, resolved before, and that we know, without hesitation, what does not belong in the answer.
